Equine Building Project:
Horse Barn with Widow’s Peak | 36′ x 64′ Post-Frame Horse Barn
Shelbyville, Kentucky
Project Overview:
This horse barn was designed for an owner who wanted a practical stable with excellent natural light, ventilation, and a traditional equestrian appearance. Walters Buildings developed a custom post-frame design that creates a comfortable environment for the horses while giving the owner convenient access for everyday feeding, care, and stable maintenance.
The owner also wanted the barn to feel distinctive rather than purely utilitarian. The all-red exterior, coordinated crossbuck details, Widow’s Peak, and open interior ceiling give the finished building the character of a classic horse barn while meeting the functional needs of a modern stable.

The Building:
This 36′ × 64′ post-frame horse barn features custom A-frame trusses that create a distinctive open interior above the stalls and aisle. Unlike Walters Buildings’ more commonly used truss designs, the A-frame system adds visible architectural character while increasing the sense of height and openness inside the stable.
The exterior is finished with red steel siding and a Galvalume® steel roof. Custom swing-out stall windows provide natural light and ventilation along the sidewall, with each window finished in red and accented by a matching red crossbuck. Touch of Class Sliding Doors, a decorative Widow’s Peak, and a cupola complete the barn’s traditional equestrian appearance.
Custom Features:
- A-Frame Trusses: Custom A-frame trusses create a distinctive open ceiling and add visible architectural character to the stable’s interior.
- Gable Windows: A grouping of windows beneath the Widow’s Peak brings natural light into the upper portion of the barn and accentuates the tall gable end.
- Touch of Class Sliding Doors: Large sliding doors with windows provide convenient building access while complementing the barn’s traditional equestrian style.
- Swing-Out Stall Windows: Red swing-out windows with matching crossbuck details provide ventilation and natural light for the horse stalls.
- Dutch Doors: Traditional Dutch doors provide convenient exterior access and added ventilation for individual stalls.
- Widow’s Peak: The extended gable creates a distinctive roofline and gives the building the appearance of a classic horse barn.
- Cupola: A decorative cupola and weathervane complete the barn’s custom equestrian design.
